Notes: Monsignor Phillip E. Desjardins was born August 15, 1876 in Waterville, Maine. He made his clerical studies at the Grand Seminary in Montreal and was ordained August 10, 1899 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Waterville. His first appointment was as an assistant to the rector of the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Portland. In 1901, he was appointed to his first pastorate, in Springvale and subsequently served as Pastor in Chisholm and Skowhegan, Maine. Monsignor Desjardins celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood in 1959. A true scholar with an unusual mastery of the French and English languages, Monsignor Desjardins had endowed the Diocese with a detailed account of its century of life and its religious antecedents. His manuscripts and records have provided a treasury of historic data, the result of a half century of exhaustive research born of the love of the Church which he served. The Reverend Monsignor Desjardins died Friday March 21, 1969 at the age of 93, after a long illness. He was retired in 1967 after 68 years of active service in the diocese and having completed 51 years as Pastor of the Parish of St. Hyacinth in Westbrook, Maine.
