Madeleine (Richard) Freeman was born on February 10, 1926. She grew up in Pembroke, New Hampshire. She graduated from Pembroke Academy and Bates College. She was a member of the Brooks Quimby Debate Team. She was involved in founding the Maine League of Women Voters. She was the first woman elected to the town council of Orono. She was president of the Maine Municipal Association. Stanley Leonard Freeman, Jr. grew up in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts. He graduated from Howard High School, Bates College, and Columbia Teacher’s College. He served in the Navy during World War II. He taught at the University of Maine in Orono. He was vice-chancellor of the University of Maine system.
