La collection comprend du matériel de recherche sur l'histoire de Lewiston/Auburn et du Maine compilé par le professeur d'histoire Bates, James Leamon, au cours de ses recherches sur les débuts de l'histoire du Maine. Il existe des dossiers thématiques sur les moulins, l'architecture, l'économie, le gouvernement et l'histoire générale de la région de Lewiston/Auburn. De plus, il existe une quantité importante d'informations sur les Franco-Américains dans le Maine et sur l'expédition Penobscot de 1779, la plus grande expédition navale américaine de la Révolution américaine.

James Shenstone Leamon was born on December 9, 1930 in Melrose, MA. Raised in Melrose and Cambridge Massachusetts, he attended Melrose, Cambridge, Shady Hill School, and Belmont High School. His father was a minister at Harvard. He attended Bates for one and a half years, joined the Navy for two years, then returned to Bates and graduated in 1955. Leamon received his Ph.D. in History from Brown, and began teaching at Bates in 1964. He served as professor of history specializing in U.S. colonial history until his retirement in 2001.
