La Sociètè Richelieu, the precursor to Richelieu International, obtained its Charter for Foundation in 1944. Since the beginning, the purpose of this organization has been to preserve and promote the French language, values, and culture. The first link, or branch, of the group began in Ottawa in 1945, seeking to protect the language and culture of minority French-Canadians. The first link to open within the United States was in 1955, and the first European link opened, appropriately, in France in 1969. Female members were not allowed to join these groups until 1982, after which several women’s groups were born, including Les Dames Richelieu de Fall River. Richelieu International and its affiliate groups work to advocate for the French peoples while also performing acts of charity; Les Dames Richelieu de Fall River in particular worked to help children around the world suffering from Leukemia.
